Chapter 59 – Yan Qingchi Valiantly Wins MVP; Ruan Wenxuan Intends to Cause Trouble

Yan Qingchi did not want to take Chen Xuanlang’s wooden tablet so quickly.
First of all, Chen Xuanlang was a team captain.
The reason why a team captain was a team captain was that he was more important than a general team member.
Yan Qingchi didn’t know if it would be good if he snatched Chen Xuanlang’s wooden tablet so rashly.
Furthermore, Chen Xuanlang was like Sun Xun: he was one of the most popular figures in this program.
Yan Qingchi was afraid that if he eliminated Chen Xuanlang like this, the other man, his fans, and the production team would not be happy.

So he took a step backwards and mounted the windowsill with his long leg.
Yan Qingchi saw astonishment appear on Chen Xuanlang’s face.
He smiled slightly, “See you next time.” And then he jumped.

Chen Xuanlang was startled.
He rushed over to the window, only to see Yan Qingchi land safely on the ground.
He (YQC) even waved to Chen Xuanlang when he poked his head out.

Chen Xuanlang was practically stunned.
Even though this was the first floor, so it wasn’t high, it wasn’t short either.
Yan Qingchi was the first to jump without anything else.

Yang Xiaoxiao witnessed this with her own eyes.
In disbelief, she asked, “Captain, are we shooting an idol drama?”

Chen Xuanlang looked at her, “Then the two of us are definitely not the main characters.”

Yang Xiaoxiao nodded and pointed out the window.
“That’s the real male lead.
The two of us are probably the vicious female and male supporting characters.”

Chen Xuanlang retorted, “I’m a righteous male supporting character. You’re a vicious female supporting character.”

Yang Xiaoxiao was practically dumbfounded, “Fake team breaking up right this very moment online.”1

Sun Xun waited outside for a while, but he didn’t see Yan Qingchi coming out.
Thus, he backtracked to the classroom, only to see that Chen Xuanlang and Yang Xiaoxiao were the only ones there.
“Where’s Yan Qingchi?”

“He jumped out the window and left.”

Sun Xun was dumbfounded, “Just how far did you push him that he had to go to that extent?! Is there anyone who would treat a newcomer like you have?!”

“Me? Push him?” Chen Xuanlang felt that he had suffered more injustice than Dou E,2 “I merely took one step forward and he just jumped, even saying bye to me cheerily.
How is he a newcomer? Have you seen any other newcomer to the show steal other people’s wooden tablets and leave by jumping out the window? He’s way more powerful than us.”

Sun Xun internally remarked, “It’s a good thing you still don’t know that he (YQC) also has the wooden tablets of Dai Hongzhuo and Li Yuanqing from your team.”

Chen Xuanlang approached him and Sun Xun took a step backwards.

Chen Xuanlang hastily spoke, “I’m not going to snatch your wooden tablet.
I just wanted to ask, since you two seem to know each other, what’s his (YQC) deal? Is he a Shaolin lay disciple? He is so powerful.”

“Well, no,” Sun Xun himself was actually a little bewildered.
His impression of Yan Qingchi stopped at the first time they met where Yan Qingchi had, without batting an eye, directly faceslapped Liao Sibo and told him (LSB) to apologize.
But, though Sun Xun knew that Yan Qingchi was not as he seemed to be (a beautiful flower vase), he hadn’t thought that the other man would be so powerful.
Thus, he could only frankly reply, “I actually can’t say for sure.
You might not believe it, but the two of us aren’t familiar with one other.”

“But yesterday you went out of your way to act protective of him.” Chen Xuanlang was puzzled.

“Oh, that?” Sun Xun explained, “Jiang Mochen and I are friends.
He has a pretty good relationship with Jiang Mochen, so of course I have to take care of him when he comes on the show.”

Now Chen Xuanlang understood, “He’s also from Nan Chen?”

 “Yes.”

“No wonder he can come on this variety show.
Then his luck isn’t bad.”

Sun Xun smiled, “Not just his luck, his strength is also not bad.”

“Yeah.” Chen Xuanlang concurred.
He suddenly narrowed his eyes, “Okay.
The time for idle chit-chat is over.
Now we’re back to playing the game.”

Having said that, he lunged towards Sun Xun.

Sun Xun ran out while judging him, “How could you just start like that? That’s not at all nice of you to do.”

“I told you it started.
How’s that ‘not nice’?”

“It just isn’t.”

Chen Xuanlang chased after him, “Then I can be even less nice.”

During their chase, the two of them ran into the classroom again.
When Sun Xun saw that the classroom was very simple—there were white smudges on the blackboard, and there were still several pieces of chalk and two blackboard erasers on the desk that didn’t look very clean—he immediately came up with an idea.
He took two blackboard erasers and slapped them together in front of Chen Xuanlang’s face.
Chen Xuanlang, caught off guard, was covered all over his face by the chalk dust.
He hurriedly turned his head and covered his mouth and nose.
Sun Xun took this opportunity to throw away the erasers and run away through the back door.

As soon as he ran up to the second floor, he saw Yan Qingchi poking his head out of a classroom, “Over here, Xun-ge.”

Chen Xuanlang hastily ran over with a head full of recently dyed “granny gray”.3

Yan Qingchi closed the door after Sun Xun came in and before Chen Xuanlang caught up to him, nearly shutting the cameraman following Sun Xun out as well.

Sun Xun panted for a while before he finally caught his breath.
Yan Qingchi asked, “How’d you end up like this?”

“Don’t mention it.
Chen Xuanlang kept chasing after me and he nearly caught up to me. Ai, I’m old.
I’m unfit for anything now.”

“”

Yan Qingchi chuckled, “Just how old are you, Xun-ge? To say such things.4”

“You don’t get it.” Sun Xun looked at him, “People like us who are tired after running two steps, unable to wake up in the morning, unable to sleep at night, constantly drowsy, and want to drink hot water, are already considered middle-aged and older on the internet.”

Yan Qingchi smiled and handed him the box, “I’ve opened it.
There’s nothing inside.”

“Then let’s keep looking.”

Seeing that Sun Xun and Yan Qingchi had reconvened, Chen Xuanlang knew that he would face some difficulty going up against two people alone.
Furthermore, through the small glass window on the door, he saw that the box that they had opened was empty.
So, his worries were put at ease and he was determined not to continue getting involved with them.
He turned around and went to look for the key elsewhere.

Sun Xun and Yan Qingchi waited for a while longer and confirmed that Chen Xuanlang was not hiding nearby before they walked out of the classroom.

There were clearly many more boxes on the second floor of Yuzhang Building than other places, but most of these boxes were useless.
Yan Qingchi opened one.
There was a note inside that said, “Hahaha, you’ve been deceived.” Yan Qingchi was speechless.
Yet the next one he opened said, “What a coincidence.
I’m also just a piece of useless waste paper.”

Yan Qingchi turned to look at Sun Xun, “Xun-ge, do these strips of paper really hold clues?”

“Some will.
And of course, some…” Sun Xun showed Yan Qingchi the note in his hands.
It read, “Wrong.
You still need to work hard ya5~”

Yan Qingchi felt that this ‘ya’ (duck) was not cute at all right now.
It even made a devious Psyduck-style grin.6 They searched around in the Yuzhang Building for a while.
During this time, they met Chen Xuanlang once.
But when Chen Xuanlang saw that the two of them were still together, the obviously disadvantageous situation he faced of going up against two people by himself hadn’t changed yet, so he ran away first.

After they searched the Yuzhang Building, Yan Qingchi and Sun Xun went straight to the cafeteria, the final destination.
Ding Zinan and Fei Jiamu were already sitting there, chatting.
The two of them were very relaxed.
When they saw Sun Xun and Yanqing had come, they still maintained their composure, even inviting the other two to come and sit with them.

“Did you find the key?” Sun Xun asked them.

Fei Jiamu smirked and dug around in his pocket with his hand.
Then he took out his hand and spread open his palm.
In his palm lay the key that they couldn’t find even after running through countless classrooms.

Sun Xun was overjoyed, “Where’d you find it?”

“Don’t even mention it.
It was inside the mop in the equipment room.
I don’t even know what the production team was thinking.” Ding Zinan remembered how it had been like when she and Fei Jiamu were looking for the key, and felt that the past was unbearable.
It was so awful.

Sun Xun, seeing how she sported an expression of suffering, teased, “Don’t worry, we’ve won.”

He took the key and yelled, “Stop!”

Everyone immediately stopped.
The production team calculated the results.
There were four members left from the Red Team and two left from the Blue Team.
There was no doubt that the Red Team had won.

Because he had snatched three wooden tablets, Yan Qingchi was the mvp of that episode.

The guests and staff members who hadn’t gone head-to-head with him were all stunned.
Fei Jiamu nudged Li Yuanqing, “What’s this all about?”

Li Yuanqing helplessly replied, “You’ll know when the show airs.
We were completely dominated without even being able to fight back.
Retaliate? We couldn’t even react in time.”

As the loser, the Blue Team drew their punishments first.
Chen Xuanlang drew the flavored drink punishment, Dai Hongzhuo drew the acupressure board punishment, Song Li had to do 20 push-ups, and Yang Xiaoxiao and Li Meng also drew the flavored drink punishment.
Li Yuanqing was very lucky; the punishment he drew was to recite a poem.

This was clearly the segment for jokes and laughs.
Both the Red Team and the Blue Team were very cooperative, and the people who had the talent for being funny put on more of a show to amuse the others.
Even Yan Qingchi couldn’t help laughing as he watched.

Then came the segment for Yan Qingchi’s reward.
The reward for this part was to be randomly drawn from the prize box.
Yan Qingchi reached a hand in the prize box and stirred it around.
He took out a paper slip and opened it to get a look at it, “Wow, a golden rose.” Yan Qingchi was somewhat surprised but, before he could get excited, he saw a line of small text above those words.
He instantly didn’t know whether to laugh or to cry, “Why is there a condition to receive it?”

Sun Xun leaned over and glanced at the note.
He burst into laughter, “‘The recipient has to sing a song related to money.’ Good luck, Qingchi.”

Yan Qingchi’s head hurt.
Singing was what he was most afraid of.
Every time he sang, it was like a public execution.
For him, it wasn’t a problem of being out of tune, but his rhythm would be wrong.
Let’s put it this way: some people dance like they were doing radio gymnastics; Yan Qingchi sings as if he is shouting the beats for radio gymnastics—the rhythm would turn into “one two three four, two two three four, three two three four, let’s do it again”.
In this case, how could you even talk about being in tune with him?

Yan Qingchi didn’t think that was a prize; rather, it was a punishment.
He looked at the director, “Can I say no to this prize?”

The director frowned, “How could that do? This is sponsored by a sponsor, and there must be screentime for it.”

“But I don’t know how to sing.” Yan Qingchi said honestly.

“Just sing a random song that’s related to money.
Do you know how to sing ‘Gong Xi Fa Cai’?7”

Yan Qingchi was instantly relieved. How could he have forgotten about this song! Therefore, Yan Qingchi sang the first four lines of “Gong Xi Fa Cai” with great feeling while looking towards the camera with an earnest expression.

This was probably one of the best songs that Yan Qingchi had ever sung for no other reason than that the rhythm was truly so easy to grasp.
With six words in each sentence, it virtually worked with Yang Qingchi’s rhythm.
He cupped his fist in one hand and sang in a lively tone, “I congratulate you for making a fortune,/ I congratulate you for being wonderful.
May the best please come here,/ and the bad please go away.
No one will blame you for being polite~”8

After he sang, Sun Xun followed up by saying, “Hahaha.
Are you wishing everyone an early year in advance, Qingchi?”

Chen Xuanlang was also very cooperative, “But you’re too early.
You’ll probably have to do it again when it’s Chinese New Year.”

“It’s fine.
I’ll just congratulate everyone on making a fortune in advance.” Yan Qingchi smiled.

A staff member handed him a beautifully packaged box.
Yan Qingchi took out the golden rose  inside and showed it to the camera.
The rose wasn’t big, but it was very exquisite and beautiful.

Sun Xun came up to take a look, “It’s quite pretty.”

Yan Qingchi nodded.
Finally, the recording of this episode successfully ended after all the guests thanked the sponsors.

That night, Yan Qingchi took a picture of the gold rose and sent it to Jiang Mochen: 【Does it look good?】

Jiang Mochen looked at the flower in his picture and replied:【Where’d you get it?】

Yan Qingchi:【It’s my spoils of war!】

Jiang Mochen asked:【You won the game? mvp?】

Yan Qingchi sent a nodding sticker:【 I’ll give it to you, the first result I got.】

Jiang Mochen looked at that exquisite rose in the picture:【You’re giving me a rose?】

Yan Qingchi replied:【Yeah, and it’s gold!】

Jiang Mochen smiled:【Okay, I’ll take it.】

He thought for a moment then replied:【I’ll put it in your little cash reserve9 and help you keep it.】

When he saw the three words ‘little cash reserve’ on the screen, Yan Qingchi was quite happy:【No need.
I’ll give you this one.
You can help me keep my next spoils of war in the little cash reserve~】

【Alright, then thank you for the rose.】Jiang Mochen accepted his arrangement very readily.

Yan Qingchi replied:【You’re welcome.】

Meanwhile, contrary to the happiness that Yan Qingchi felt, Song Li was not as happy.
He sat in Ruan Wenxuan’s room, sighing with despondency, “I really did not expect for him to appear, much less that he would actually target me and even want to slander me.”

“He has quite the guts.
Any way you look at it, you can be considered as his senior in this show.
It’s whatever if he didn’t curry favor with you, but he even directly talked back at you.
He’s pretty brash.”

Song Li smiled bitterly, “He was always under my shadow when he was at Xing Yue10.
He was a nobody.
Now that his fortune has been reversed,11 there was no way that he wouldn’t come and flaunt about it to my face. Ai.” He shook his head.

Seeing him like this, Ruan Wenxuan proactively said, “Alright, don’t feel miserable.
This kind of person just needs to be taught a lesson.
I’ll teach him a lesson when we record the show tomorrow.”

“Forget it.
He clearly has a pretty good relationship with Sun Xun.
You’d be put in a difficult position if you dealt with him and he told Sun Xun.”

Ruan Wenxuan scoffed, “Do you think that I’m afraid of Sun Xun?”

He sat on the sofa, his legs crossed and resting on the table, eyes full of disdain, “I’d long seen him as an eyesore.”

The Author Has Something to Say:

Sun Xun: What did I do to you?! How did I offend you?!
Yan Qingchi: Don’t worry,12 I’ll help you return the hit!

Thank you for reading my translation!
