What Is It That You Really Want? (2)

Ding Yi slumped down onto her bamboo chair and asked the system, sullen: This was the eighteenth time this year that someone played matchmaker for me.
Can’t you just somehow censor them?

The system replied coldly: No.
I won’t help you with things you’re able to take care of.

Ding Yi retorted pretentiously:  Aren’t you worried I might fall for their honeyed words? Humph, I’m still a blossom in my prime, the age where a woman is most easily led astray!

The system sent a calmly smiling emoji, saying: If you give up the mission half way, you’ll be erased.
Do you want to try?

Ding Yi: “…”

Talking was easy, but acting was another matter.
Ding Yi was a coward externally as well as internally.

She expended so much effort to get along peacefully with Mu Yueshi, and it was almost time for him to go train in the mountains.
There was no room for mistakes.

Ding Yi counted the days on her fingers, and at the same time she watched Mu Yueshi’s stats intensely.

It was strange, Mu Yueshi’s darkness rating had dropped, and after forming the contract, his reliance rating had shot up all the way to 90%.
It was only an inch away from being maxed, but it did not move an inch in the several years following!

Ding Yi didn’t know what went wrong.

She asked the system but did not get a certain answer.

In summary, in these years of living together with Mu Yueshi, she had not earned a single point, and existed as a useless deadbeat through and through.

The system did some analysis occasionally and offered her a conjecture: …Maybe the target had a change of mentality somewhere in the middle, and so the difficulty had increased?

After hearing that Ding Yi was incredulous: You’re a system, you can’t just suddenly change your standards like that! And what does that change of mentality even mean? You’re just making me worried! Please give me a hint boss, there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with the little boss’s development! I’ve met all the standards that a keeper* should achieve!!

*(animal keeper)

To the confused host, the system said coolly: Then what would you say is the reason for the numbers remaining static?

Ding Yi didn’t have an answer, and so she could only put up a tough front: …But I’ve already worked so hard to establish a trusting relationship with the boss! Look at what a bright and healthy child the boss has developed into!

The system did not reply any further, seeming to descend into deep thought.

At night, Ding Yi ate supper with Mu Yueshi as usual.
The food wasn’t bad, but the atmosphere was heavy.

Ding Yi still had her conversation with the system on her mind and absentmindedly picked at her food while eating very little of it.

Mu Yueshi was aware that Ding Yi had something weighing on her mind, and so while he ate gracefully as usual, his mind was also filled with calculation-

Is she unhappy?

Or is she feeling bored?

Or is it that the matchmaker earlier in the morning had hit the mark… that she wanted someone she could rely on?

Mu Yueshi’s pretty face was calm, but a seething darkness roiled in his chest.
Under the shadows cast by the lamp, his eyes seemed a bit cold.

But before Ding Yi could notice his abnormality, his expression returned to his normal bright, docile smile.

Ding Yi saw the exuberant Mu Yueshi and was at a complete loss.

So just where did things go wrong?

After being stared at by Ding Yi for a while, Mu Yueshi’s sensitive temperament began to run wild again.

It was night.
Things were quiet except for the chirping of insects and two beating hearts.

“What’s wrong?” He asked, his voice slightly dry.

Ding Yi’s expression was troubled as she didn’t know how to pose her question.
After scratching her head, she could only ask in a roundabout manner: “Yueshi, you… do you still have something you’re unsatisfied with? Ah, or something that you want?”

There was nothing else she could think of.

Mu Yueshi was taken aback for a moment and felt an indescribable sense of disappointment.
He suppressed the disappointment and dejection in his eyes and shook his head: “No.
Everything is fine, there’s nothing that I want.”

Ding Yi felt like she had hit a wall, but then it seemed to dawn on her.
Could this be the problem?

Was I so successful that the boss has everything that he could ever want, and so there’s nothing that I could do to improve his mood!

“Why not?” Ding Yi asked with a bit of agitation: “Look, the outside world is so beautiful, and you haven’t seen any of it yet.
There must be something out there that you want…”

“Then what about you?” asked Mu Yueshi suddenly, cutting her off.
He was smiling, but his eyes were heavy: “What do you want?”

“Me?” Ding Yi was slightly startled by the question, and so her mind wasn’t really there when she mumbled: “…it’s probably to go home.”

Mu Yueshi’s smile froze at Ding Yi’s reply.

Go home.

…So you don’t think this place is home?

Mu Yueshi sat there, his back frozen stiff.
His expression hadn’t changed much, but there was a blizzard brewing inside his body, causing his palms to go cold.

Suddenly, alarms began blaring inside of Ding Yi’s head, and catching on that things seemed to be heading in the wrong direction, Ding Yi’s survival instincts kicked in.

She slapped Mu Yueshi on the back, guffawing: “Ha ha ha! I’m just joking! Where else is home but here, ha ha! Here, I’m getting really hungry, let’s eat! Yeah, let’s eat!”

A while later, under Ding Yi’s fearful gaze, Mu Yueshi finally moved.

He sensibly went along with Ding Yi and ate quietly, holding back the desire to ask questions.

Phew.

The furiously eating Ding Yi breathed a sigh of relief while shedding a torrent of tears internally.
What the hell was with that string of abnormal status warnings!!
